This was a huge opportunity for me. I love Airboy. A few years ago, the character became a public domain property, meaning I could publish my own Airboy stories. When I was working on stories for APN 3, I suggested an Airboy story with one question in mind: What if Airboy returned from WWII but somehow returned to modern times where he learned the people fighting by his side were now behaving the same way his enemies did? It was a bold idea to fit into three pages. I channeled my golden age captions, knowing German was going to hit a home run with his art. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I do.

While we were working on APN 3, Ben Ferrari asked me to develop a short using some of Pilot Studios’ characters. We settled on Deadbeat and Silent Knight. In this story, Deadbeat is looking to stop a bunch of protesters whom he believes are wrong in their actions. Wearing the Confederate flag as a mask was a huge sticking point with me. A lot of people, myself included, like the design of the flag without realizing what it stood for. I wanted to present this mindset through Deadbeat. I knew Deadbeat, like myself, needed to learn what that symbol really stood for. That is where Silent Knight came into the story. Hopefully, I did a good job conveying this message.

Fun Fact: This is Deadbeat’s first comic book appearance.

When I saw the cover for APN 2, I immediately fell in love. I didn’t think this book would be complete without a story featuring Liberty and Justice. I pitched it to Ben and Chuck who agreed. Then the challenging work began. Chuck Wojtkiewicz challenged my writing abilities. He took the first draft and told me exactly how much it did not fit his thoughts on the characters. That might have been the first time I heard those words. I sat back down and hammered out ideas with Chuck and came up with an entirely new draft, which is what you see here.

I wanted to approach APN 2 differently. Keeping with the anti-racism themes that inspired my stories, I wanted to make the adventures more fantastical. Ben and I created Warhawk as a super soldier. Those are always fun. It occurred to me, if American’s were going to experiment on a human, they might choose a Native American. That was the seed the led to Warhawk.

This little short, along with Magni’s, let to an inevitable crossover in APN 3.

When we were putting together APN 2, Steven Wilcox expressed interest in participating in the book. He was probably thinking he would draw a pin-up, which is a safe bet. I take pride in challenging artists and offered to write a short specifically for him. Knowing Steven is a huge John Byrne fan, I approached him with the idea for a Nazi Superman. Steven jumped at the opportunity to work on this character and the results are outstanding.

Stemming from the popularity Magni and Warhawk had, it was natural to pair them together for APN 3. Who knows what the future holds for these two characters.

I always had an idea to bring Magni and Warhawk together in a crossover. Two super soldiers on either side of the warfront was a natural sequel to their first appearances. I thought about how Magni would react after his major revelation at the end of his first appearance. Then I wanted to examine what would happen if his vengeance was ripped away. This is a feeling I think many people can relate to. How often do you want to do something out of anger, but you can’t? It’s something Magni is experiencing in this short.

Beetle Girl Featuring Saturn

Beetle Girl Featuring Saturn in HOLY SPIRIT

This was an interesting story. I was approached by Ben Ferrari. He asked me if I would like to have Saturn cross over with Beetle Girl from Lucky Comics. This sounded like a fun challenge. Writing Saturn is some of the most fun I have. Since she is rooted in mythology, I looked at a unique way to bring myths into Beetle Girl’s universe. I think we succeeded with that. This also marks the first, printed mention of Savior. Her origin story is written and drawn by Kurt Belcher. It is marked to be printed as a backup story for Saturn 2. I promise, both those books are worth the wait. The best part about this story, it led to a follow-up where we introduce another new Pilot Studios character, Silent Knight. His first appearance is set for the Pilot Studios annual. I can’t wait for you to read these.

Turn, Turn, Turn

Turn, Turn, Turn is my contribution to Pilot Studios’ anti-racism anthology, Always Punch Nazis. This story looks at major historical events and asks how far things need to grow before we finally say, “Enough.” I hope you enjoy my story as much as I enjoyed creating it. If you are interested in owning a copy of Always Punch Nazis, send me an email and I will send you a copy.

Divebomb's family fortune is gone. Now, he must defend himself from the world's governments who would kill to have the technology he used to create his jetpack while trying to make ends meet by working for a shipping company.

Divebomb is an instant classic. Kurt Belcher and Ben Ferrari developed this idea and asked me to write a short. Luis Rivera offered to lend his talents to my words. Let me tell you, if you have the opportunity to work with Luis Rivera, you better bring your A game. He is a genius. That's how Inheritance was born.

This was my first ash-can comic. I walked around New York Comic Con handing it out to anyone who wanted a copy. I was experimenting on this comic and it shows. I thought that it would be fun to color the book in crayon (it was a bad idea). This issue was originally intended to act as a one-shot, but it would ultimately evolve into the comedic, bad art trilogy. I am planning to continue the adventures of Don and Ray on this site in the future.

I intend to update this on a regular basis while Ron works on the newest issue. Check back weekly for the next page.

Back to Hell: The Continuing Adventures of Don and Ray

Back to Hell was never supposed to happen. It came from a train ride following New York Comic Con. The reception for the first book was pretty good. I watched people laugh and heard some really good critics. I felt like there was some momentum and came up with the sequel during the train ride home.

As you read issue 2, you see some solid advancements. Ron's art started to smooth out. He became more comfortable with the medium. This trend would continue throughout the next issue as well. I think the colors stand out here too. You will notice the gag on page one. It's directly inspired by the critique by my pal who simply recommended we use markers. Smart man. The lettering still needs work, but that's all me. Please bear with it.

I'm not planning on putting this entire issue up right away. Look for weekly updates here. Ron needs some lead time on the upcoming Continuing Adventures of Don and Ray.

Don and Ray: The Search for Llama

Written by: Jason Huwer

This is the third book in the Don and Ray trilogy. I think it's my favorite too. If you read these in order, you can really see the progression. At this point, Ron got used to drawing the characters. It was also our third time working together, and, even though we did this for fun, we started to really gel as a team. There was a clear understanding of the jokes that needed to happen and a true trust between us. It's a great culmination to the story.

Like all the Don and Ray stories, there's another one in me. So, be on the lookout. This website is a great platform for their continuing adventures.
